The Showboats were given the #4 overall pick in the 1984 USFL Draft.

The Showboats also received additional picks in each odd-numbered round throughout the draft.

Though the 1984 USFL Draft only comprised 19 rounds, through wheeling and dealing the Showboats selected an amazing total of 37 players, almost 10% of the total number of players selected throughout the entire league.

Surprisingly though, the Showboats selected DB Barney Bussey with the #4 overall pick instead of a player that would have added immediate marketability to the club - Brigham Young QB Steve Young.

Young would be the 11th overall selection in the draft, taken (and later signed) by the Los Angeles Express.
