Robert "Woody" Widenhofer was introduced as the head coach of the Oklahoma Outlaws at the 1984 USFL Draft.
Widenhofer, who had been an assistant under Chuck Noll with the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, was seen as a credible choice for the team.
After a 6-12-0 season and the team's merger with the Arizona Wranglers however, Widenhofer was jettisoned in favor of a coach that added local marketability - Frank Kush.
Kush had been the head coach at Arizona State University years before, but was dismissed for physically assaulting his players.
Kush didn't dramatically improve the franchise's fortunes, finishing 8-10-0 in 1985.  The field at Sun Devil Stadium however today bears his name.
