Lathrop went unselected in the 1978 NFL Draft.
Before he got into his first NFL game with the Denver
Broncos, two other NFL teams (the Philadelphia Eagles
and Detroit Lions) had already released him. The
Broncos released him after a year then re-signed him -
only to release him again two months later. The
Green Bay Packers signed him, keeping him for a year but
releasing him prior to the 1981 season. So when
the USFL came along, Lathrop jumped at the chance to
make the squad.
Signed as a free agent by the Chicago Blitz, Lathrop and
his fellow members in training camp were given a $ 5/day
per diem. During a team meeting several teammates
complained about it, at which point Lathrop showed his
leadership potential. "Listen... I didn't
come here for the training camp money. I came to
make my salary." That type of unselfish
attitude endeared him to George Allen and the rest of
the Blitz coaching staff, and Lathrop had, at long last,
found a football home - at least, until the Blitz and
Wranglers famed "franchise swap" after the
1983 season.Lathrop
would go on to play for the "new" Wranglers in
1984 and appear in the USFL Championship Game, along the
way being selected twice to the USFL's
"All-League" team. Protected from a
dispersal draft held when the Wranglers and Oklahoma
Outlaws merged, Lathrop wrapped up his playing career
with the Arizona Outlaws. He then went into
coaching, where he has been coach with the CFL's Toronto
Argnoauts, as well as a Defensive Line coach and
Defensive Coordinator with the Ottawa Renegades and
British Columbia Lions. Today when not coaching he
lives in Ahwautukee, Arizona.
