Jim Bates took over for Gil Steinke as head coach after the 1984 season, with Steinke being "kicked upstairs" as the 'Slingers Director of Football Operations.
This arrangement lasted all of 12 games.  When owner Clinton Manges failed to pay his players, Bates went to bat on their behalf, threatening to quit as head coach if Manges didn't make restitution by the team's game against the Oakland Invaders.
When Manges didn't hand over the players' back pay, Bates handed in his resignation - and Steinke came out of retirement to coach the team for the rest of the '85 season.
