GOLD
TRIVIA |
| -- |
| Jim
Asmus joined the Gold for 1985, having
previously spent time with the USFL's Arizona
Wranglers. |
| -- |
| Asmus
took over kicking duties for Brian Speelman, who
was released. |
| -- |
| Bill
Johnson recorded the Gold's only 1,000-plus yard
season, racking up 1,261 yards and 15 touchdowns
in 1985. |
| -- |
| Quarterback
Vince Evans, who came over to the Gold from the
Chicago Blitz, was the team's second leading
rusher with 283 yards and 7 scores. |
| -- |
| Evans,
who had signed a multi-year, multi-million
dollar deal with the Blitz, was relegated to
splitting quarterbacking duties with Bob
Gagliano. |
| -- |
| Leonard
Harris caught a team record 101 passes in 1985,
gaining 1,432 yards, another team receiving
record. |
| -- |
| Despite
the Gold having the second-best record in the
Western Conference, the team was forced to go on
the road for the first round of the USFL
playoffs against the lower-seeded Memphis
Showboats. |
| -- |
| The
reason? USFL playoff games were
administered by the league as opposed to its
teams. Attendance in Denver had slipped so
bad, so fast that to minimize the amount of
money the league would lose on the playoffs,
they awarded the game to Memphis, where they
thought more fans would attend. |
