How did the New Jersey Generals get the opportunity to sign 1984 Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie?
They held his USFL rights by virtue of including him among the team's 1985 territorial draft selections.
Each of the 14 teams playing in the 1985 season was entitled to select up to 25 players from a slate of local colleges and universities.
Generals owner Donald Trump made signing Flutie the team's #1 priority, and paid handsomely for his services.
Flutie's contract was worth a reported $1.2 million a year.
