Gamblers were aligned in the USFL's Central
Division for their inaugural season in 1984. |

in a division with two other expansion teams
(the Oklahoma Outlaws and San Antonio
Gunslingers) and the Chicago Blitz (which were
the transplanted Arizona Wranglers), it was
expected that the division's fifth team, the
Michigan Panthers, would roll to an easy repeat
as division champions. |

Gamblers proved otherwise, however, racking up
13 victories in 18 regular season games and
scoring a whopping 618 points to overtake the
Panthers and earn the Central Division crown in
their inaugural season. |

| The
Panthers, who finished 10-8-0, had to settle for
second place and a wild-card berth in the
post-season. |

| Both
teams would end their 1984 seasons in
heartbreaking fashion. The Panthers would
be knocked out of the playoffs in the first
round by the L.A. Express in a 27-21, triple
overtime thriller that was the longest game in
pro football history. |

| The
Gamblers meanwhile would take a 16-3 lead
against the Arizona Wranglers in their
divisional playoff matchup, only to see it
evaporate in the game's final minutes. The
Wranglers scored a pair of touchdowns to
eliminate the Gamblers, 17-16. |
