FEDERALS
TRIVIA |
| -- |
| Former
Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers head
coach Ray Jauch was chosen to serve as the first
head coach of the Washington Federals. |
| -- |
| In
the CFL, Jauch had reached the league playoffs
10 times in 13 season, winning the 1975 Grey Cup
with the Eskimos. |
| -- |
| His
career record in the CFL before joining the
Federals was 117-85-4. |
| -- |
| Jauch
would last all of 19 games at the helm of the
Feds, being fired after the team was humiliated
by the expansion Jacksonville Bulls in their
1984 season opener, 53-14. |
| -- |
| Dick
Bielski, the team's offensive coordinator, took
the reins from Jauch and coached the team the
rest of the way in 1984, going 3-14-0. |
| -- |
| When
the Federals moved to Orlando for 1985, new
owner Donald Dizney brought in Lee Corso as the
team's head coach. |
| -- |
| Former
NFL running back Terry Metcalf was brought onto
the Federals staff as the Director of the
Washington Federals Foundation. |
| -- |
| The
Federals were aligned in the USFL's Atlantic
Division in 1983, along with the Boston
Breakers, New Jersey Generals, and Philadelphia
Stars. |
| -- |
| In
1984 the Breakers were replaced in the division
with the Pittsburgh Maulers, but otherwise the
alignment remained unchanged. |
| -- |
| The
Feds traded away two players who would appear in
the inaugural USFL Championship Game: DB
Mike Lush, who was sent to the Philadelphia
Stars on August 30, 1982, and LB John Corker,
who the Feds dealt for the Michigan Panthers 5th
round draft choice on December 16, 1982. |
| -- |
| A
demonstration of owner Berl Bernhard's desire to
keep costs to a minimum, when on the road to
play the Stars in Philadelphia, the Feds stayed
at the Quality Inn Airport rather than more
expensive digs. When in Detroit to play
the Michigan Panthers, the team stayed at the
Somerset Ramada Inn. |
| -- |
| The
sale of the Washington Federals to Donald Dizney
was formally closed on October 12, 1984. |
