The Washington Federals intended to select QB Reggie Collier with their first round draft choice (and fourth overall) in the inaugural 1983 USFL Draft, but Birmingham traded draft slots with New Jersey to move up to #3, using that pick to select Collier. 
The Feds would then use their choice to select Southern Methodist RB Craig James, but the team would trade for Collier on January 12, 1984.
