The USFL's 1985
first-round playoff matchups were determined by USFL Director of
Operations Peter Hadhazy based on what were perceived to be the
best economic scenarios for the league among the eight playoff
qualifiers. As a result the Denver Gold, for example, who
had the second best record in the Western Conference and should
have by all right hosted a playoff game, instead went on the
road to Memphis, as the Showboats were drawing well.
Commissioner Harry Usher had decided that neither Denver nor
Baltimore would be permitted to host a post-season game due to
their poor attendance during the regular season, and that
Memphis and New Jersey, thanks to their comparatively healthy
attendance figures, would be assured home field in the playoffs'
first round.
